ADVOCATES FOR MAMMOTH ALERT - OLD MAMMOTH PLACE APPEAL

This Appeal was filed because the Planning Commission and the Town Council consistently recommend and vote to amend our General Plan and Specific Plans to accommodate developers demands. In the case of the Old Mammoth Place project the Council also exempted the project from paying development impact fees (DIF), decreased the number of affordable housing units they are acquired to supply and parking spaces required, and is planning to increase density as much as double, among other giveaways. …

Last night this Appeal was denied by the Town Council by a vote of 3 to 1. Council members Sugimura, Eastman and McCarroll voted against the Appeal, Harvey voted for the Appeal and Bacon was recused.

Councilman Eastman’s vote included a lecture to the Appellants on the audacity of the community to question Planning Commission and Town Council recommendations and decisions.

The vote was taken after mountain CEO Rusty Gregory , who had not entered the discussion before then, stood up to speak last (but not least) and to instruct the Council on how they were to vote. Which, except for Councilman Harvey, they did.

Mr. Gregory also included a lecture on what he expects from the Town in the future.

Councilman Eastman will be running for reelection this June. Councilmembers Sugimura and McCarrol will not.

It is an opportunity for the community to fill these seats with candidates who will reflect the stated wishes of the community in their voting decisions.

This is a company town that is based principally on one industry and we are physically isolated here in the eastern Sierra from other business customers and job choices. There are many business owners and foundation leaders we heard from who agreed with the Appeal but who were reluctant to speak for it because they depend on the good will of the “company town owner” for the survival of their businesses and organizations.

It is clear that the Town intends to continue in the direction of giveaways and concessions in exchange for “amenities” the community has said it doesn’t want.

It is Advocates position that we need a Town Council that is not an automatic rubber stamp for the “company town owner’s” decisions. We’ll be endorsing candidates for the openings on the Town Council and will forward our recommendations for your voting consideration.
