Current Activities/Actions You Can Take: Current Issues 2007 General Plan Update for the Town of Mammoth Lakes The GP has been adopted and now we need to work to preserve the integrity of the document which is under constant assault. Neighborhood District Plans - Some have begun with input from the community. It often appears these public hearings are more to fulfill a legal requirement than to listen to what the public wants. Currently in progress are North Old Mammoth Road (including Clearwater/Old Mammoth Place) and North Village Specific Plan (including Mammoth Crossings), Shady Rest /Hidden Creek Crossing and Snowcreek VIII. Overbuilding Threatens Town Finances -- Analysis as of July 2009 shows that the Town is overbuilt and will go into the red if many more vacant housing units are built without sales and Transient Occupancy Tax income to support them. Read our Position Paper and detailed analysis. Mammoth Yosemite Airport -- Regional jet service (Horizon Air) operates daily during the winter season from Reno, Los Angeles, and San Jose. During the spring/summer season (April-September) daily flights will be offered between Mammoth and Los Angeles. There is still unfinished business regarding the judgment against the Town resulting from a suit by Hot Creek Aviation. This is now on appeal. Town News -- The Town is distributing a weekly email, Stu's News, that provides information on meetings, events, and issues, and here you can see current and past newsletters or be added to the distribution list. For more information visit the Town of Mammoth Lakes official website. New courthouse complex is under construction at the entrance to Town. Tourism and Recreation Commission is, once again, being separated. The Tourism segment will be conducted by a private company. It is important that we stand up for equal funding for the Recreation segment as this affects those who live in Mammoth Lakes. Water · The Mammoth Community Water District commissioned a new Mammoth Creek EIR, available for review in the spring of 2010. At issue is the maintained flow in Mammoth Creek and the water withdrawal from Lake Mary. There is still no final approval of the amount of water the town of Mammoth Lakes is entitled to withdraw from Lake Mary. · A conceptual model - computer simulation - of the Mammoth Lakes aquifer has been finished. It analyzes the current Mammoth water supply - Lake Mary water, plus the well field, and its potential in the future. The study concludes that at “build-out” with 52,000 people in Mammoth at one time (PAOT), there will not be enough water for even one “dry year.” There are no current plans to increase the water supply. Clearwater Development on Old Mammoth Road is now named “Old Mammoth Place.” Currently the old buildings have been upgraded and the “Rafters” restaurant is open again. However, this does not mean the old proposal of double density and 65’ height is forgotten. The owner came back at the January Planning Commission Meeting to plead for the double density approved already by the Town Council in the “Clearwater Specific Plan.” The project was granted the zoning changes. Remember that the Advocates collected over 500 signatures for a petition to have this Specific Plan brought to a vote at a public election. The petition was dismissed by the Town on a technicality and plans are going ahead for this over-sized, amenity-light project on Old Mammoth Road. The amenities the Town traded increases in height and density for include a small conference center on the property and more unneeded commercial retail, while the citizens would rather have a roof over the Ice Rink, improved infrastructure, etc.
